Did anyone watch the last episode of Summer Nude last night? I’m guessing no one except me did considering how large of a fall the series’ ratings took over the previous month. If you didn’t watch it you should be glad you didn’t, because it would’ve been a waste of 45 minutes of your life. This is probably the worst ending that I have ever seen in a drama to date. It’s hard to describe in words, but I’ll try to for the sake of anybody who is even considering watching the last episode. If that’s you keep reading.
Okay, obviously I watched all 45 minutes of it. I thought about switching it off twice because the content of the episode was just getting unbelievably stupid but I refrained from doing so by telling myself multiple times “I’ve watched it all the way to here, they must have planned SOMETHING good to end with”. But my last hopes for this series were shattered. There was nothing deep, nothing meaningful and nothing worth seeing.
Let’s start off with the first thing I found incredibly stupid. Natsuki has spent around 5 episodes battling with her obvious feelings for Asahi. In Episode 10 he finally admits to Natsuki that he likes her. So what does she do? She says that her feelings haven’t been reconciled yet and that she needs time to think. Whattttttttttttt? Come off it. You’ve been into this guy pretty much since you punched him in the stomach after getting left at the altar. You’ve spent so much time already thinking about your feelings and reconciling them, how much time do you want? 5 more episodes?
Oh yeah, by the way: you know how in the last episode Hanae and Hikaru started dating? Yeah, well guess what? They decide to get married in this episode – and they have their wedding in it too. Um so wait a minute, the two of them have been dating for…6 months now? Maybe less? I’m not 100% sure of the timeline but they mention in it multiple times that it’s been around a year since Natsuki started working at Aoyama so it definitely hasn’t been over a year. What the hell? To add to my frustration there was nothing building up to this, just one phone call from Hanae to Natsuki being all like “Oh yeah, Hikaru and I are getting married!”. Alright, alright. Nice move guys. Too bad Hanae is so cute that I can’t stay mad at her. Fuck old mate Hikaru though.
But okay this could all be forgiven if the climax of this episode is good, right? That is, after all, why I continued watching despite everything else. Well…To put things simple there was no climax. Nothing. Want me to explain more? Well, the wedding ends and everyone kind of splits up. Asahi goes looking for Natsuki(it’s already dark) and finds her on the beach. He asks her to do fireworks with him, like they promised a year ago. Then he tells her he likes her. Then she hugs him and admits she likes him too. Then they kiss. The end. This was one of the biggest “What am I watching?” moments of my life. Look, I thought her wanting to reconcile her feelings in the first place was ridiculous but despite that I would at least want her to take her “reconciling” a little seriously. Nope. “I like you” “Yeah I like you too!”. Done. Almost as good as the climax involving Kasumi.
So yeah, in closing if you’re even considering watching the last episode of this mess quit while you’re ahead. You’ll thank yourself for it. Watching it actually confirmed what I had been thinking all along: that the writers had just ran out of ideas. The actors are the only one redeeming thing about it. I started slowly realising this episodes ago but the plot was not bad enough to stop me from completely quitting on it. Thankfully they saved the absolute worst episode for last. Great work guys. This drama had so much potential to start with, especially with the whole Kasumi plot line but they managed to fuck that up tremendously as well. I was thinking about subtitling this series but my mind has been changed. It is not worth subtitling. Rant over. If you’ve got any opinions on this last episode please go ahead and write them below. I will try to be gentle with you if you disagree with me.
