Boku no Ita Jikan(Drama), First Impressions.

Boku no Ita Jikan

Fuji TV has a new drama running from 10pm every Wednesday, it’s called “Boku no Ita Jikan”. The original work for this drama is a manga with the same name(what a surprise). Nothing too serious happened in Episode 1 but I think that it served as a pretty good base for what’s going to come. Although, I have a strong feeling that this drama is not going to have a happy ending. If you wanna find out more hit the jump and keep reading.

This story is about a university student in his final year named Takuto(played by Haruma Miura). Because he’s in his last year, like every other Japanese person, he has to look for a job. This is actually a really big thing for Japanese people for some reason. I suppose its a cultural thing. When you get to the end of the 3rd year of university you start looking for a job. If you haven’t found one by the middle of your last year of university you start to get really worried about it because there’s huge pressure on you from your parents and society to find one. Most people who have trouble finding a job or are unable to consider themselves failures and in some severe cases university students actually kill themselves because of it(a minor character in this drama did too during Episode 1).

There’s also a girl named Megumi(Mikako Tabe) who goes to the same university as Takuto and she’s looking for work too. One day they get invited to a group interview together at the same company and during it Megumi’s phone starts ringing. Just when she’s about to fess up to the fact it’s her phone and apologise Takuto stands up first, and says very calmly that it’s his phone and that he forgot to turn it off. After the interview she stops him outside and asks him why he did it and he said it was to “impress the people interviewing” and show them he could “respond calmly” to a bad situation, not for her sake. He says “I’ll see you ’round” and disappears. At this point Megumi still doesn’t know they go to the same university.

Megumi and Takuto are both having pretty big issues finding a job. There’s not too much pressure on Megumi from her mother but Takuto has quite a lot of pressure on him because his parents own a hospital and his father is a doctor. His younger brother is studying to be a doctor so he gets a lot of attention from their parents while Takuto is just kind of ignored by them. Takuto’s father keeps offering him an office job at the hospital but he rejects it every time. I think it’s some kind of pride thing.

At some point during all of this Megumi and Takuto meet at school and end up hanging out together. They trade phone numbers and meet a couple more times. One of the students in their cohort has massive issues finding a job and ends up killing himself. They run into each other at the funeral and end up talking afterwards. Takuto asks Megumi if he can kiss her and she gets really mad and storms off saying that he’s not the person she “thought he was”.

Episode 1

Later on they both get called to the same group interview for another company. During introducing himself and explaining what he “learnt in school” Takuto stops abruptly and starts speaking from his heart, making an impromptu speech about how he’d just spent his whole life acting because of the expectations that his parents and society had put on him and that looking for a job was another key example of “acting”. You would think that this would lose him any chances of getting the job but he gets an email a few days later confirming employment with the company.

During the entire episode Takuto has weird, random muscle spasms, like when he’s playing soccer or when he goes to ride a bike. At the start of the episode the narration explains that this is actually a disease called ALS(Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), which causes your muscles to weaken and difficulties in breathing and swallowing. As the disease progresses you fully lose the ability to breath so its necessary to implant some kind of artificial breathing mechanism into the patient. Most people die within 5 years of the onset of the disease from respiratory issues. Takuto is still in the early stages of ALS during the first episode.

Episode 1

While I don’t think that this drama has a big chance of ending happily I still did find it enjoyable to watch. A month or so ago I watched all the episodes of an another older drama called Summer Snow, which didn’t have a very happy ending either but got me hooked big time(it also had a main character with a somewhat rare illness). I want to see more of Boku no Ita Jikan and I’ll definitely be watching Episode 2 next week.

  1. I remember watching Summer Snow and getting totally hooked. It had what I would call a bittersweet ending. Of course I like happy endings, but sometimes that’s too Hollywood and I prefer those Japanese stories. I can think of Beautiful Life too, one of Kimura Takuya’s best.

Boku no Ita Jikan sounds interesting, and I like Miura. I hope someone subs it [no, it’s not a hint] because my Japanese is mediocre, and I miss a lot of the dialogue.
