Google starts offering .みんな(.minna) domain.

Saw some pretty interesting news this afternoon, apparently Google has started offering a new domain name to customers – this time it’s .みんな or in Roomaji .minna. You can watch the video above to find out more about it, it’s really just like any other typical Japanese commerical. I think they’re trying to target people who make community sites or sites for certain groups. For any people reading this that can’t speak Japanese “minna” roughly would translate to “everybody” in Japanese.

Some of the examples given for site names were “LetsSave.minna” or “Hiking.minna” and in the video the girl character talks about making a community site for people that like bikes. She wants to pick a domain name that’s easy for people to remember. When you think about a typical site, it usually ends with .com or .jp and a lot of common word patterns or phrases are already taken for those because they’ve been around so long. I think this new domain names is meant to be a replacement for those, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before Japanese people think up domains for everything under the sun ending with .みんな. If you want to find out more about the new service you can check out Google’s Project site for it here.
