Arashi’s member Kazuya Ninomiya is going to be appearing as the lead role in a new drama this season called “Yowakutemo Katemasu“, which is going to be a story about the under-dog baseball team of a studies-focused high school that Ninomiya’s character becomes the coach of. There was a press event held for the drama yesterday in Tokyo and when Ninomiya was questioned about the best parts of the drama by a reporter he paused for a moment and then responded “I don’t think the drama is going be very influential”, which shocked a lot of the other people present. It almost sounded like he was saying that the drama wasn’t going to be very good.
But Ninomiya expanded on his comment by adding “there’s a lot of dramas out at the moment about cooking and bankers(for example), people watch some of those and think ‘oh, I want to be a banker!’ but this isn’t a drama like that – it’s more relaxed and is mostly for the purposes of entertainment. I’m not looking to make a huge influence on people’s lives through it”. Although the comment was shocking for some I think that Ninomiya might onto something with what he said. Japanese people get a little too wrapped up in dramas creating some kind of influence, rather than just being made to give people something interesting to watch. Everything that’s aired on TV doesn’t have to have a huge impact on the community and their direction in life. I have to admit that I’ve personally been inspired by a few dramas that I’ve watch but that doesn’t mean I only watch dramas that make me feel inspired. If you want to catch Yowakutemo Katemasu it’ll be airing on Saturday Nights from 9pm on Japan TV, you can view the official page for drama here.
