Shitsuren Chocolatier Episode 9: Wow Kaoruko is Misunderstood.

Shitsuren Chocolatier

I write about Shitsuren Chocolatier quite a lot and I’m pretty sure that I’ve been making posts about it since the first episode. I know that I should probably write more about other dramas too but it’s just too interesting to not talk about. Episode 9 aired this week which means we’re getting closer and closer to the finale and closer and closer to finding out who Sota is going to end up with as his girlfriend. Erena and Saeko get a lot of attention because they’re both really beautiful aesthetically but this week I wanted to talk about another character who is interested in Sota but hasn’t gotten anywhere with him so far, Kaoruko. When I watched Episode 9 this morning I realised that Shitsuren Chocolatier would probably not be half was interesting at it is without Kaoruko as one of the main characters.

I think the best part about having Kaoruko around is her bitter attitude towards everybody and everything. Every time Sota does something wrong or Saeko starts leading him on to get his attention she has really gross, unrealistic fantasies about hurting them or bad things happening to them. It actually got to the point in Episode 9 where she would just say what she was thinking to Sota right in front of him about what he’s doing, unfortunately he just chose to react by ignoring her and returning to his own fantasies. The dynamic between them makes me kind of confused about how much Sota has caught onto so far. Does he know that she likes him? Or does he still think that she’s just some kind of big sister character? I have no clue but he does a really good job of just letting all the emotions she throws at him go straight over his head.

Shitsuren Chocolatier

Something else that kind of surprised me was how Kaoruko reacted to Erena showing up to see Sota towards the start of Episode 9. Erena has a talk with Ricdor about Sota(not actually using his name) and Ricdor tells her that she should really go see him and talk to him – and make him regret dumping her. So she goes to Choc La Vie and at the time Kaoruko is sweeping outside. She asks if Sota is around and Kaoruko says yes but as Erena gets closer to the door she suddenly starts attacking Erena about not fighting harder for Sota and giving up. This scene actually made me laugh a little because you have Erena who is honest with her feelings about Sota but is a bit too easy on him and Kaoruko who is completely dishonest about her feelings but at the same time is really hard on Sota. Anyway, it made me laugh because I still have no idea what Kaoruko actually wants. She obviously wants to be with Sota but doesn’t have it in her to be straight about it to him, but at the same time she (pretty much) attacks another girl verbally about not fighting harder for him, almost to the point where it sounded like she was giving a pep talk. The actions her character keeps taking really, really confuse me.

Erena

That being said I actually think that Sota and Kaoruko might be good for eachother, or at least that she’s a better match for him than Erena or Saeko. I don’t think Erena or Saeko are really the types of girls that you marry – or at least that you marry and end up living happily with. They just stand out too much and have way too many options(not that Sota doesn’t either at the moment). For some reason when I saw the scene in the last episode of Sota and Kaoruko together in the bed in her dreams I thought that they suited each other. It’s just a hunch though. I haven’t read the manga so I have no idea what’s going to happen next. If you have any of your own ideas about how Shitsuren Chocolatier is going to end I’d love to hear about it in the comments below. Okay, that’s all I have to say about this drama for this week.

  1. I understand, and my guess is that they may set him up at the end with Karuoko, but she has so far made herself annoying and isolated. Obviously Saeko isn’t a good idea. I like Erena [though I don;t care for her teeth], and she does seem to love him. But a model like her may not be the best idea…

  2. I have read the manga and in it Kaoruko is the main character and not as bitter. I feel Asami-san has really done a great job portraying her inner narrative and supressed feelings. In the Manga i want her to end up with Souta while in the drama with Sekiya. But if you go back and rewatch episode 1 and episode 8 Souta is always watchful and aware of everything Kaoruko says and how she reacts, he values her opinion to the point where it affects him to loose his cool and be hurtful. Also when he was with Erena he had a flashback where he says ” she semed shaken” when they had their argument, and he never wants her to be aware of his sexual relationships. My guess is when Souta realizes how important Kaoruko is for him it will be like they hit him over the head and probably too late. Saeko and Erena are the fantasy. Kaoruko is the reality that has always been supporting and encouraging his dreams.^^

    • Wow thanks for writing so much about what you thought. After watching the episode I feel like he’s going to end up with no one or there’s going to be some sort of ending where it doesn’t make it obvious who he’ll end up with. I wish I’d read the manga too because then I’d have a better idea of what’s happening. Oh well, I guess it’s something I could do after the drama series finishes.
