I’m looking forward to Watashi no Kirai na Tantei.

Kirai na Tantei

Like I said yesterday the new drama season is finally starting to kick off but there are still a lot of dramas that aren’t going to start broadcasting for a week or two. If we were in the middle of a good season I’d probably have something to write about everyday but alas we’re right at the start line of a new season and we don’t even know whether it’s going to be good or not(by the way last season was amazing in my opinion). In saying that I still have pretty high expectations for this season because I’d rather be watching drama than not be watching drama. Anyway, today I want to talk a little bit about a drama from this new season called “Watashi no Kirai na Tantei”/「私の嫌いな探偵」 which will be starting its run with Episode 1 on the 17th of this month in the Friday 11.15pm time-slot on TV Asahi.

I’ll start off by saying that what first attracted me to this drama was the casting. You’ve got Hiroshi Tamaki playing the lead Detective part(Morio Ukai) and you’ve also got Ayame Goriki as his side-kick(Akemi Ninomiya). I’ve always liked Hiroshi Tamaki, I thought he was quite good in Kekkon Shinai and I also really liked him as the Chairman in Iron Chef when it was revived. You also can’t forget his appearance as Chiaki in Nodame Cantabile’s drama and live-action movie, because in both his acting was exceptional. I can’t really remember seeing much of Goriki until last season when she was in Kurokochi(which was hands down my favourite drama for that season), but she’s been in a lot of dramas up until now and is quite prominent in the Japanese modelling world. I have a good feeling about these two working together and this part should be easy for Goriki to transition into after what she was doing last season(both dramas are essentially mystery-themed). I also saw Rui Kuihara in the preview video (which can be found on the official site), which got me a little more excited but I don’t think he’s going to be playing a very substantial role.

What about the story? Well from what I read of the on the website Ukai is your typical, scum-bag private detective. He only likes taking on cases that are going to make him a buck. He has absolutely no interest in complex murder cases and he would much rather be taking on adultery investigations or looking for the lost dogs or cats of celebrities because that’s where the real money is. One day a strange flyer mysteriously falls into his vicinity, with an advertisement for office space that can be rented for 10 000 yen($100) a month. It turns out that what’s on the flyer is true and the owner of the building is a young woman named Akemi Ninomiya. Ukai ends up taking the bait and moves his office to her building under a contract for the promised amount. On the day of the move Ninomiya comes over to the new office with “hikkoshi soba”(Soba you give someone who has just moved in lately) and suddenly Ukai starts to get a “bad feeling” about her.

Days after there’s an incident in town where a lady falls off a building and Ukai goes to the scene, taking Ninomiya with him. Once they’re there he finds out that Ninomiya is actually a mystery-nut and that she’s quite good at solving mysteries. And I’m guessing that this is where their odd-couple, detective pairing starts. If you didn’t realise it already “Watashi no Kirai na Tantei” actually roughly translates to “The Detective that I hate” so I’m sure that you can imagine just from the title that the two of them are going to clash heads a bit during the series. The preview video I talked about before only goes for 30 seconds or so, so if you have time you should check it out and you’ll know what I mean.

Is there anyone else looking forward to this drama? Or anyone who doesn’t want to watch it for some reason? Or maybe there’s something else you want to watch coming out this season that you think will be more interesting? Feel free to comment below and tell me how you feel about it, I’d love to know.

  2. I really like to watch it, but not enough to watch it without subs… so I hope someone will pick this up in the future.
